More beauty for everyday life

Since the 1920’s, Scandinavia has produced a large number of design icons in architecture and design. The focus has always been on affordable modernism – good designs and high quality, for both home and work. Yvonne Gordon talks to 2cooldesign, the furniture and interiors company which has brought this Scandinavian philosophy to the Irish Market.

2cooldesign was founded 1999 by Titta Isokuortti and Ulla Enkvist, two Finns who have brought their expertise in Scandinavian design to the Irish market. Titta and Ulla had visited Ireland many times on holiday and noticed that many of their favourite design furniture ranges were not represented here yet and knew there would be a market for them. They then decided to move here and start the business, combining Titta’s business and marketing background with Ulla’s skills in design and interior architecture. "We are the genuine Scandinavian design house with true expertise," says Titta, "We run our business and do the work we love in the country we love."

Located in the Old City, Temple Bar, Dublin, 2cooldesign stocks an extensive range of Scandinavian furniture and accessories - from Finland, Sweden and Denmark, and also provides a design support service for architects and interior designers for both commercial and domestic projects.

The most important philosophy behind Scandinavian furniture design is balance with nature – products are made to last in both style and quality. Placing great emphasis on eco-effectivity, designers work on the principle that by increasing style and quality, the longevity is increased and there is therefore no wastage. Style is ensured by well designed products - the industry has been using designers since the 1930’s and 1940’s, and quality is ensured by rigorous testing.

Interest in 2cooldesign’s products was initially created because of the novelty factor associated with their fresh ideas and innovative designs. There is now high demand for the products because the quality, style and affordability have been noticed. 2cool’s services include creating designs, providing drawings for furniture and floor plans, ordering furniture and materials. Completed projects include office and reception areas, restaurants and nightclubs and domestic projects such as kitchens, bathrooms, saunas, fireplaces and decking.

The company has also recently begun to supply auditoriums and this summer, 2cooldesign will open a household interiors retail shop, 2cooldesign home, in the Old City, Temple Bar, Dublin. 2cooldesign home will sell furniture, textiles, crockery and accessories.

2cooldesign believes that interiors should be functional, ergonomic and economic. Form follows function: Once the basic creative design work is done, specifying the purpose of the space and the project budget, the goal is to achieve the most functional, ergonomic and economical space which is pleasing to the eye and which will enhance the efficiency of day-to-day tasks. This is carried out in a youthful, modern style, which is adapted to the individual taste of the customer and the company emphasises punctuality, good customer service and environmentally friendliness in all of the projects that it carries out.

"The greatest designers and architects in the history of modern Scandinavian design are well-known worldwide: Alvar Aalto, Tapio Wirkkala, Eero Aarnio, Arne Jacobsen, Yrjo Kukkapuro and many more. We would like to also represent the designers of today that will be the ‘designer heroes’ of tomorrow, and who’s work we sincerely admire" says Titta Isokuortti. "Each of our different ranges has its own character, but rather than being in competition with each other, the ranges compliment each other. We stock all price ranges - from competitive to top of the range all good durable quality."
