SODIUM AND HEALTH
Although sodium is an important part of a balanced diet, too much can adversely affect health by increasing the risk of developing high blood pressure.
Medical experts believe that people with an inherited risk of high blood pressure, or those who eat excessive amounts of salt or other forms of sodium could benefit from reducing their sodium intake. For specific information consult your family doctor.
It is estimated that Irish adults consume approximately 9g of salt per day. The Irish Heart Foundation Nutrition Policy advises on an upper limit of 6g of salt per day. (This is equivalent to 2.4g of sodium).
