Dublin Port Tunnel

Port Tunnel Dublin Port Tunnel is an underground dual carriageway linking the M1 Dublin-Belfast motorway and the M50 to Dublin Port. Twin dual underground tunnels connect East Wall Road in Dublin Port to the M1/N1 (Dublin Belfast road) close to Dublin airport and south of the M50 ring motorway which links all the main arterial routes to and from the capital. The tunnels are linked every 250 metres by pedestrian cross passages, and every 1,000 metres by vehicle cross passages, providing emergency exit routes. The overall length of the scheme is 5.6 km of which 4.5 km is tunnel. The tunnel opened to traffic on December 20th, 2006.

The Purpose of the Dublin Port Tunnel

The tunnel’s purpose is to take heavy goods vehicles accessing Dublin Port off the city streets. It is not a commuter route to the city. It is intended to take many of the current 9000 heavy goods vehicle (HGV) journeys per day off the streets of Dublin City, easing congestion and improving the quality of life. Some trucks will continue to be needed to deliver goods and materials inside the city, but the scale and timing of those journeys will be determined by Dublin’s HGV Strategy which will be introduced shortly after the Tunnel opens.
