National Play Day 2013
Come on out and Play!
Sunday 7th July in Merrion Square Park from 2-5pm
‘National Playday’ is an annual event to promote play and encourage communities throughout the country to organise energetic and health-focused play activities in their own cities, neighbourhoods, streets, parks and open spaces. The event highlights the facilities available in parks and open spaces and promotes the social and health benefits of active play for children. It features low-cost games such as skipping, marbles, penalty shoot-outs, relays and obstacle courses alongside imaginative and creative elements of play such as messy play, art, dress up and den building.
The theme for this year’s event is ‘Street Games’ which is aimed at communities taking action to encourage and support children and young people playing outdoors more often. As we all know playing outside is beneficial for children’s overall health and well being, the sight and sound of children playing on the street is an important element of a vibrant, sustainable community. Subsequently, this year’s event will include a special interactive theatre performance by Blackthorn Arts that celebrates ‘Street Play’.
So ‘Come on out and play’ and join Dublin City Council in celebrating the ‘child’s right to play’ during ‘National Playday’ on Sunday 7th July in Merrion Square Park from 2-5pm in what is guaranteed to be a fun filled, messy, active and imaginative event!
As well as ‘National Playday’ local communities can take the initiative to host Playdays any day throughout the year by making time for play using simple ideas, materials and equipment to provide a variety of play opportunities for children and young people in their local area.
