Secondary Level Learning
Students ages 12-18 usually attend a post-primary school. Students are obliged by law to attend school until the age of 16. There are several different types of post-primary schools, secondary schools, vocational schools, community schools, comprehensive schools and community colleges.
Education is provided free of charge at community schools, comprehensive schools, vocational schools and community colleges. Education is free in most secondary schools. A small number of secondary schools, mostly in Dublin, are fee-paying schools. Also, most secondary schools are voluntary catholic schools which means they are denominational. This is mostly because there was a tradition in Ireland of schools being set up and run by Catholic groups such as monks or nuns for example, The Christian Brothers and the Salesians. Community schools and comprehensive schools are also majoratively denominational. Community colleges and vocational scholls are multidenominational.
