Reading and Writing Schemes
The National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) was established in 1980 and since 1985 it has received a grant to operate a national office. NALA is a membership organisation with voluntary status, concerned with national co-ordination, training and policy development in adult literacy work in Ireland.
In the 1997 International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS), 25% of the Irish population were found to be at the lowest level of literacy. At present there are more than 28,000 people participating in VEC adult literacy programmes. This is more than a four-fold increase since 1997 when 5,000 people were attending the literacy service. However, this is less than 5% of Irish adults who experience literacy difficulties and in general they only have access to two to four hours tuition per week. In order to comprehensively address the adult literacy issue in Ireland, there must be a range of accessible options available for adults to improve their literacy skills.
