Primary School
Statutory schooling age in the Republic of Ireland is between the age of 6 and 15 years. Children may start at 4 years but the average age is 5. The Constitution recognises parents as the prime educators of their children and there is a right to educate at home, although in practice this rarely happens.
Primary schools in the Republic of Ireland are almost exclusively National Schools and non-fee paying, most of which are state-aided parish schools, established under diocesan patronage.
