Nutrition
Nutrition is defined as the process by which a person takes in and utilizes food material. The body obtains energy (in the form of food) for growth, maintenance, and repair of its' cells. These processes include ingestion, digestion, absorption, and metabolism.
Calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI) is the new way of assessing if you are a healthy weight for your height. It is more accurate than judging solely by the person's weight, as it takes into account the person's sex and height. Body Mass Index is calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in meters) squared. (BMI=KG/m2). The higher the BMI, the greater the risk of developing health problems. (exceptions: children, pregnant or lactating women).
Nutrients in food are referred to in calories. A calorie is a unit of energy and the amount of calories in a food, is a measure of how much potential energy the food contains. The recommended daily intake (RDA) of calories is 2000 for women and 2500 for men. It is vital that individuals control their calorie intake, as a poor diet can lead to obesity and other health problems. Obesity is the medical term used to describe the state of being overweight to the point where it is harmful to your health. A healthy, nutritional diet, combined with an active lifestyle, can significantly reduce an individual's likelihood of dietary problems.
