What about starting a new thread for people like me who would like to learn Irish?
I left Ireland many years ago when I was 10 years old, but I still remember some of the phrases today.
I would like to learn it phonetically, as I have no wish to read or write Irish, but would love to learn my mother tongue, as I plan to go over to the west coast of Ireland next year, and visit places that speak the language on a day to day basis.
I think many others are like me, and want to learn, or re-learn the language.
any help would be appreciated.
I have been on the internet for courses, and find them very limited.
I think it would help if I/we could converse with someone on here.
Go raibh maith agot

You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I guess I'm not the only one
they'll all feck off now that the resession is on the cards, and it will be back to the old ways. (Irish people working in Ireland)
anyways heres my contribution to phonetic Irish.
dia duit= hello = sounds like=dee-a-ditch
fáilte = welcome=sounds like=faul-cha
conas tá tu = how are you= sounds like =conas tattoo
slán = goodbye =sounds like =slon
slán go fóill = goodbye for now= sounds like =slon go fole
go raibh maith agot= thank you = sounds like = gurra morra gut
gaeilge= Irish = sounds like = welga
ni thuigim = i dont understand = sounds like =nee-higgum
tóg go bóg é = take it easy = sounds like= toge guh bug ey
and very imporantly:
pionta domsa = mines a pint = sounds like = pyunta dumsa
I may be wrong on some pronuncations, but you get the picture.

Bhuel mo chara,
Sin maith an cuimhneamh é (- Thats a good idea)
Cá bhfuil tu i do chonai anois (where are you living now)
Slán anois (bye for now)
I think this is a very good idea. I dont suppose anyone knows why I can put a fadá on a,e, and o but not on i or u??
Last edited by redbhoy; 03-07-2008 at 12:46 PM. Reason: wanted to see if the fadá's came out when I hit submit.
