    Default The Dublin Dardanelles

Interview here with historian James Durney (no relation to myself despite our similar surnames) on how the Aungier Street area became known as the 'Dardanelles' due to the high number of attacks on it during the War of Independence.

The IRA would mount gun and grenade attacks on passing lorries and then melt back into the crowds. The biggest victims seem to have been civilians though which caused Cathal Brugha to order them not to do operations on Saturday eveings when peope were doing their weekly shopping (people had to work a half day on saturday then).

Second part of the discussion here.

Oh, yeah it's been playing up. Try opening the audio liks in a new tab (right click) that should work.

For some reason at the moment the fotware isn't letting us play the interviews online.
