Default 1922 Civil War - Drumcondra - "The Red Cow Three" Murders * Looking For Relatives

    Hi All

I have some friends doing some serious research and a documentary on “The Civil War”.

One story that is of particular interest is that of the murder of three boys from Drumcondra.

They were known as the Red Cow Three.

Edwin Hughes (17) - 107 Clonliffe Rd, Drumcondra.

Brendan Holohan (17) - 49 St. Patricks Rd, Drumcondra.

Joseph Rogers (16)- 2 Upper St. Brigids Rd, Drumcondra.

Hunted by Charlie Dalton’s CID squad and arrested on Clonliffe Rd, Drumcondra for putting up Republican Posters.

They were murdered (shot in the head) after they were arrested on October 7th 1922 and their bodies were found in Clondalkin.

For the purpose of the documentary and research they wish to speak to any relatives of Rogers, Hughes, Holohan, Dalton or to anybody

that might have any information on this unsolved Civil War crime. Please if you have any information can you email

Re; Fianna Boys murdered at Clondalkin
Just to put you right in the interest of correct history.
Charlie Dalton was not attached to Oriel House CID. He held high rank in the Free State Army Intelligence Section at Wellington Barracks. Perhaps it was a co-incidence that it was he who abducted the boys on that night. Dalton and a fellow officer were, that night, leaving two ladies home from the theatre. Another co-incidence, the two ladies were nieces of Moynihan, head of Oriel House and lived a few doors away from him on Clonliffe Road. Perhaps he had the boys picked up for having the audicity to put up posters a few yards from his home ( the corner house at Distillery Road) The other officer with Dalton was Nicholas Tobin, brother of Liam Tobin, former second in command of the old Intelligence section during the 'Tan War'. I have investigated 25 assassinations of Republicans in Dublin, from August 1922 to July 1923 and all but one can be laid at the door of the Free State Army. The CID at Oriel House may have been used to track people down, but it was the FSA that did the killing.
