    Default Marino Local History : Underground Tunnels Casino, Marino ??????

    Hi All ;

    If you were in Marino in the 1970's or before, you would of known about the tunnels in and around the Casino and at the back of the Christian Brothers
    There is various explanation of these tunnels; I contacted some Historical Society for Mining here, they confirmed that there was lead mining in the area in the 1700's and these tunnels are illustrated on maps, however there is large body of myth around some of the other tunnels in and around the Casino aand at the back of the Christian Brothers

    Has any one got any info/folklore/photographs ?

    Cheers
    Steff

    Default Casino Marino

    I lived in Marino in '69 & '70 and used to play in the tunnels at Casino Marino as a young boy. I remember several of them were open for 20 or 30 metres. One had an incredibly thick door at the end which we never could open. I don't know about the ones at the back of Christian Brothers. Was that the monastery just off Griffith Ave.?

    From what I've been told, the tunnels used to extend to various points throughout Dublin, especially the nearby strand, and were used during the revolution. I am American and on my last night in Dublin, a few of my friends invited me to one friend's house. We went to the back yard to his clubhouse, and he showed me a trap door which led to one of the tunnels which ran under his house. We went inside, and he told me that his father, brother and he had explored the tunnels extensively and told me the history. Then, he took me in his house and showed me about a dozen old guns they had found down there. My friends made me promise I would never tell anyone about it, but it's been so long I hardly think it matters now.

    I was just reminiscing about Dublin and saw your thread. I've seen recent pictures of the Casino, and it looks like they've covered the tunnels over. It's an interesting place, kind of mysterious too. Let me know if you want to talk about it.

    Hey Magwich,not long ago i found out about these tunnels and found it very interesting that nobody really knew too much about them or where they led too,although i was talking to a group of caretakers who were refurbishing the casino not so long ago before it was re opened to the public.They told me the tunnels are now closed off but that one tunnel leads the whole way to the hell fire club,which is quite a long distance for a tunnel to extend too.They also said they often heard voices and cries coming from the tunnels which they told me alot of people whent missing in many years ago.I found your story very interesting as I had been looking for recent information on the subject but couldnt seem to find any,I was wondering if I could find out what area of Dublin this house with the trap door is in?Kind regards Cat.

    I'd say the bit about the tunnel going all the way to the Hell Fire club is a right tall tale. The Hell Fire club is approximately 15 miles from Marino.
